Numbers  - by the end of kindergarten your child is expected to be able to identify and count sets for the numbers 0-20.  Make number flashcards and number set flashcards.  Have your child match the number to the correct number set.  Or, focus on number recognition one day and have your child tell you the number on each flashcard.  On the next day, have them count each set and have them tell you how many items they counted.

Counting  - our goal for kindergarten is to rote count to 100.  That means counting verbally (1,2,3.... all the way to 100).  Besides taking counting to 100 with your child, try taking turns counting (you say 1, your child says 2, you say 3, etc.  It might be easier at the beginning if you say the even numbers so that your child doesn't get stuck on 20, 30, 40, etc.), practice counting by 10s to 100.  Many times that helps when they get stuck at 29, 39, 49, etc.

Number writing  - we will be bringing home a number rhymes book at the beginning of the year that will help your child remember the correct way to make their numbers.  Please note - many times in kindergarten your child may write their numbers backwards.  This is developmentally appropriate and may happen off an on into 1st grade.  If they do write their numbers backward, write the correct formation above the number and have them try again.

Shapes and solids  - we work on basic shapes - circle, square, triangle,  rectangle, hexagon and trapezoid.  We also learn solids - sphere, cone, cube and cylinder.  Some of these are hard names.  Make shape and solid flashcards to practice at home.
